Aera Energy barrels ahead with oil field

The signing of new California regulations on air quality control and emissions standards will do nothing to stem the flow of demand for oil production in the Tri-Counties. That's a big part of the reason why Bakersfield-based Aera Energy is counting on its East Cat Canyon field coming online.

Aera Energy began a public outreach campaign for the North Santa Barbara County oil field redevelopment project in late July. The project is currently conducting an environmental impact report as part of the California Environmental Quality Act review process.

Though the project won't actually get oil out of the ground until around 2023, Aera's not concerned that redoubled goals to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources in the intervening time will decrease demand, said Project Manager Will Morris. The state only produces around a third of the 1.6 million or so barrels of oil it consumes per day. Read more
