Happy 40th Anniversary Olsen's Bakery
A fourth generation baker, Bent has been a fixture here in Solvang. Learning his craft from his father, he is our Danish baker extraordinaire!! To the locals who start their day at Olsen's with the traditional Northern European continental breakfast of a freshly baked hard roll with butter, havarti cheese and jam or for the visitors who have breakfast in their hotels - chances are they are also eating some sweet made at the bakery as Olsen's supplies almost all the hotels in Solvang.
I even know of a couple who come down from Lompoc every morning just to have their breakfast at Olsen's. Then there is the lunch crowd and the afternoon tea/coffee crowd who indulge in an afternoon treat.
Walking by the bakery at the wee hours of the morning you can smell the titillating aromas permeating the air as Bent is the kitchen preparing the day's the array of tempting sweets.
Once the bakery is open, you will find Susy out in the restaurant tending to customers or behind the counter.

This team works together like a well choreographed ballet. Speaking of traditions.. there are several that Olsen's brings to us. The Christmas Gingerbread House that Bent has been building for forty years now. Starting with a table size and then doing the giant size about twenty years ago is an annual tradition for Solvang's Christmas season. It takes about one week of almost non - stop work to create these life - like masterpieces. No one makes an authentic Danish Kringle like Bent. And no one sells Kringles like Olsen's, baking thousands each year. And then there is the traditional Danish Wedding Cake (Kransekage) which Bent created in a 10 foot tall version (pictured here) for 100 people partaking in the Taste of Solvang to enjoy in 1996. A smaller version can be found, preserved under glass at the Hans Christian Andersen Museum. And of course the Traditional Danish Cookies bought by the tubful and enjoyed and received as gifts the world over. And of course no one makes Pumpernickel Bread like Bent - another Danish speciality. Bent donates his time by being active in the community having sat on the boards of the Solvang Conference and Visitor's Bureau and the Santa Ynez Valley Visitor's association. He is a member of eth Vikings, the Danish brotherhood, Rebild Society and Danica. It's been forty years but somehow it seems that Olsen's Bakery has been a fixture in Solvang FOREVER! Happy Anniversary Bent and Susy Olsen Thank you for making Solvang a sweeter place to be with all your delicious treats. |

Counting Our Fans
Kenneth Harwood
Economist
Solvang Chamber of Commerce
Solvang and its neighbors have fans. We assume fans to have economic value in offering good words about us, and thus in attracting visitors, residents, and businesses.
Here are estimates of the number of fans we have on Facebook, the largest of the World Wide Web's social networks. |
 |
Lest you think this is kid stuff, the most usual age group on Facebook is ages 35-54 years. Fans like these tend to travel and to spend at travel destinations.
Size of community seems to be important. Fans of a small community like Ballard are not recorded.
Size of community is not everything, it would seem. Solvang and Buellton have somewhat similar sizes of resident populations, and widely different numbers of fans on Facebook. |
 |
|
We could guess at what makes a difference. An important possibility is favorable word of mouth recommendations. Perhaps long and strong advertising for visitors makes a difference.
Keep in mind that one person might be a fan of more than one place. The numbers of fans in the table do not add together. The hidden real total likely is smaller than the sum of fans you see.
A possibly cheerful side note is that fan seems to be short for fanatic. Private individuals have friends on Facebook. Public places like public celebrities have fans who in some sense are more than friends.
Please go online to Facebook for estimates of numbers of fans for various places. Facebook demographics online show modal age group. See Merriam Webster Dictionary online for an etymology of fan.

IN MEMORIAM...Thank you Steve Nelson -- we will miss you!
On July 17, 2010 Solvang lost a cherished citizen following a courageous five year battle with cancer.
Owner of the Royal Copenhagen Shop on Copenhagen Drive, Steve Nelson embodied all that was part of the Danish Viking spirit. Nothing kept him down - not even cancer. He was dedicated to Solvang and his Danish heritage which was reflected in his professional life and his volunteer activities helping to improve our community. One of the original promoters of what is now known as the Copenhagen Revitalization Project, Steve saw the need to improve the street long before the concept became a reality. He gave his time to the Solvang Conference and Visitor's Bureau and wanted to be a part of the upcoming Centennial planning if not for his illness.
There was a quote at his memorial service that sums him up perfectly: "You don't move mountains, you climb them." We will remember the mountains that Steve climbed for Solvang as we remember him.
Our thoughts are with his wife Conny, his daughter Mia and his family.
Thank you Steve - Solvang will miss you! |
