When you meet Jennifer Arant, the owner, sommelier, and
wine maker of Lions Peak, you know that there is a story behind
the artistic wine labels, decorative interiors of her tasting room,
and vineyard house. Beyond the eclectic design of tasting room,
the history of Lions Peak is in plain view.
Library wines dating back to 1994 are
on the wine racks, as well as the current
releases, and there is a rich history of
awards to be seen from the most renowned
wine competitions in California. A story
awaits you to hear about the rich legacy of Lions Peak!
Arant entered the world of wine through the back door. She said,
“As a child, growing up in a farming town in West Texas, there wasn’t
much to do except watch old Hollywood movies, dance, listen to
classical music and the top 40, and dream of being in California.”
Her dreams as a young child, led her to a career in which
her imagination and creativity flourished, the world of interior
design. The world where you could close your eyes and picture
all the beauty of the arts, and then you could create it. And, thus
the story begins to unfold, from the West Texas farmland to the
cosmopolitan city of Dallas, where as a young girl her family would
take her to see the splendor of the early days of Neiman-Marcus.
Jennifer became educated in the school of design and architecture
at the University of Texas in Denton, and she started her first career
as a professional residential and model home designer in Dallas,
Texas. Intuitively she knew that this was just the beginning of
her dreams. Arant knew that her destiny was to head West, and
therefore, she made a decision that was life changing. Arant rented
her home in Dallas, packed up her prized 3x5 Persian rug, oriental
lamp, clothes, and headed to LA in her
French Peugeot to take a position as a
Senior Designer with one of the most
prestigious design houses in Southern
California and never looked back.
However, LA was just Arant’s the first
California stop. Life continued to have new plans for her and on a
Valentine’s Day trip in 1991 her life style changed from the design
world LA and Dallas to the country vineyard life in the early days
of the Paso Robles AVA. Arant would be first to tell you that there is
more to owning a vineyard than sitting on the veranda watching the
sunset and drinking a glass of wine. “Having a vineyard is farming
12 months a year and depends on Mother Nature and the economics
of running a small business. You wear many hats from growing the
grapes, to establishing the Lions Peak brand in 1994. I have seen
it all—from heavy rains to severe drought and from great hardship
to prosperity. With this being said I have worked hard and feel
blessed to have had the good fortune of having this legacy to share
with my family and friends. Whenever I reflect on my life, I never
imagined that I would be in the wine business living on a vineyard
on the Central Coast of California producing wines that are highly
recognized as some of the Best in California! Some would say, I am
living the dream, but they only see the icing on the cake” she laughs.
Lions Peak’s 45 year old historical boutique Estate Cabernet
Sauvignon vineyard and Victorian home in the Paso Robles AVA is
nestled on a hillside with a breathtaking 180 degree views of the
vineyard and distant Santa Lucia Mountains. The vineyard home is
often open to wine club members by appointment.
After the 2003 earthquake in Paso Robles, Arant had the
opportunity to open a tasting room in the quaint village of
Solvang in Santa Barbara County. The tasting room is located on
Copenhagen Dr. which is right in the heart of “little Denmark” and
cannot be missed with its authentic thatched roof! The interior
of the tasting room is welcoming and cozy and is an artistic
expression of Jennifer’s design background. LP offers a collection
of exquisite and unique wine glasses from Murano Italy, and
branded wine-related accessories. Also, the tasting room offers
diverse selections of tasting options which range from a red or
white flight to a chocolate and dessert wine pairing. LP specializes
in Bordeaux, Rhône, and dessert wines, and the tasting room is
open from 11:00-7:00 Monday through Saturday. Jennifer is there
most weekends to talk about her wines. If you are lucky, she will
share her stories about the early years at Lions Peak, and offer her
Southern hospitality to you by opening one of the library wines for
you to experience the terroir and how special the vineyard is.
Lions Peak in the planning stages of reopening a tasting room
which features LP Wines with an artistic design salon in Paso Robles
or San Luis Obispo. Arant feels that she want to offer her wines to
tasters in Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo. Tasters will
have the opportunity taste LP’s wines at their Northern or Southern
location and visit the boutique vineyard in the Paso Robles AVA.
