Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital Celebrated National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week at Get SMART About Your Heart Event on February 15, 2018

Solvang, Santa Ynez Valley, CaliforniaDozens of area residents attended the Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital’s free heart health event on Thursday, February 15, 2018, from 12-2 p.m. “Get SMART About Your Heart” was held at the cardiac rehabilitation facility adjacent to the hospital at 2030 Viborg Road, Suite 108, in Solvang.


In celebration of National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week, Marsha Griggs, RN-BC, CCRP, SYVCH cardiopulmonary rehabilitation coordinator, along with staff, offered free blood pressure readings and free cholesterol checks for 30 people, tours of the facility and heart healthy refreshments. Stacey Bailey, SYVCH’s registered dietitian, was available to give nutrition advice for optimum heart health. Guests also were able to sign-up for the free portal Cottage Health MyChart, providing tools to manage health care online at your convenience.


Griggs states, “SMART stands for changes that are Specific, Measurable, Adjustable, Realistic, and Time-based. It takes very little effort to adjust your diet or exercise routines and make positive changes for longer heart life.” She has worked in the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital in Solvang since 1989 and personally experienced her own hereditary heart condition, successfully treated and using many of the techniques she teaches her patients.


Since 1988, the SYVCH cardiac rehabilitation department provides a medically supervised outpatient program to assist those who have had heart attacks, cardiac procedures, or other heart issues. SYVCH provides medical supervision, assessment and counseling by registered nurses and dietitians, EKG and blood pressure monitoring, and support with managing stress and healthy diets.  The cardiac rehabilitation program requires a doctor’s referral.
