Welcome to Stand Down Weekly Update!

October 1, 2018

Veterans Stand Down is fast approaching.  The final planning meeting for Stand Down was held on Wednesday, September 19.

We kicked off the opening of our collection centers last week on Wednesday, September 26 at the Santa Maria Fairpark from 12 noon-2 p.m.  A big shout out and thank you to our collection center volunteers:  Glenda Webb and CHP Officer Efram Moore.  Glenda reports that donations were slow the first week, and we definitely need help from the community to meet our goals.  Glenda and Efram will be at the Fairpark October 3, 10, and 17, from noon-2 p.m. accepting donations.  Items we are collecting:  NEW ITEMS PLEASE--towels, blankets, toothbrushes, toothpaste, men's and women’s long-sleeve tee shirts, underwear, boxer briefs, shoes, baby diapers, small size shampoo, bar soap and hangers.

Donations can also be taken to the Lompoc Chamber of Commerce and the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce.  We are working on locations in Santa Barbara and Goleta.

Stacy Silva of SB County Animal Services who runs the Pet Zone at Stand Down reports that we are in need of L and XL collars and 6’ nylon leashes.  A few other items she would love to have are more pet food donations; mainly dog food, treats and toys to pass out.  Other pet related items, in new condition, are welcome.  They can be dropped off at 548 W. Foster Rd.

Our Public Relations Committee Chair Nora Wallace of Lompoc Valley Medical Center put the word out to the local media to let them know that Stand Down is in full swing preparing for October 20 and to let the community know how they can help.

Thank you to Frank Mejia, Heather Gardner, and Carolina Carrillo of the Department of Social Services for believing that we could get our web registration up and running!  ...and it’s working great!

Thank you to the American Veterans United who stepped up and have taken on the snack booth at Stand Down. Welcome to our new shower team Shower the People from 5-Cities area.

Thank you to Melanie Waffle at Next Day Signs for updating our Stand Down banners and donating the use of two “signicades” for use at the donation center.

The Fairpark walk-through is this Wednesday, October 3.  Meet us at Gate 1 on Thornburg Street at 11 a.m.  We will tour the Fairpark grounds, the Convention Center, Park Plaza, and Medical Plaza (Sports Area).

If you have good news to report, or need help with your Service Provider Guidelines or Volunteer Waiver, please let me know.
